Yala National Park, on Sri Lanka's southeast coast, is the country's most visited wildlife park and one of the best places in the world to see a leopard. Alongside its leopards, the park's mix of scrub jungle, lagoons and coastline is home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and more than 200 recorded bird species.
The dry season, roughly February to June, usually brings the most reliable sightings. In most years Blocks 1 and 2 close for a while at the height of the drought (usually around September and October) while the other blocks stay open, so check before you book.
Two nights at a camp or lodge on the park boundary gives you time for several game drives. Yala is five to six hours from Colombo by road, and combines well with the south coast beaches or Ella.
